The board of directors at Columbus, Ohio-based utility American Electric Power (AEP) has elected Nicholas K. Akins board chairman, effective Jan. 1. Akins is president and CEO at AEP.

According to AEP, Akins has worked for the company for 31 years. Before being named president and CEO, he was executive vice president - generation for AEP. Akins was also president and chief operating officer for Southwestern Electric Power Co., an AEP utility serving customers in Louisiana, Arkansas and northeast Texas.
